When after 30 years of absence I went again to play wargames with figures, what most caught my attention was that the figures now are much more beautiful; the vehicles have better details and, generally, the level of painting of both is spectacular. However, the game boards still have the same old neglected look. It was like seeing a painting by a master stuck in a dirty cardboard box.

A classic wargame battlefield

A casual battle at the club

I didn’t understand why the wargamers – most of them dedicate enormous efforts to paint their figures and decorate the bases – seem not to worry worry if their great figures are placed on boards covered with cloths, paperboard or painted wood.

I realized that few wargamers, concerned about the aesthetic, are trying to improve this situation by using textured game boards, which despite their high price are warped and bent.

I decided to try to find a solution and after several months of testing and a lot of mistakes and failures, we developed the "Warmat". The objective was clear and unquestionable; creating a battlefield that had a look as natural as possible, but that also had to be easy to use, carry and store and allow - if possible - the creation of mountains and valleys. It should also be durable and safe.

This is a handmade product that requires several days of physical and hard work. It is such an exhausting process that we must leave a rest between each warmat. For this reason this is not a product we like to sell purely for money; it is a labour of love.

Making warmats is not our main business. Our goal is different; provide them to those who will enjoy it. A splendid backdrop for amazing figures.

Huey on a warmat

The same kind of casual battle at the club, but using a Vietnam warmat.

There are many alternatives - much cheaper and usually produced by a machine - that can satisfy the player who cares about on the environment of his battlefields. However, in our opinion, such alternatives never look real.

The price of warmats is not based on the cost of materials and time, skill and effort  taken to produce them. In fact, the price is the same as those old textured boards; a few simple polystyrene plates coated with a layer of synthetic material.

Special conditions

All warmats are hand crafted in our studio in Madrid. We only accept 4-6 orders each month.

Normally (except the customer decides the opposite) all edges/ borders around the  perimeter of the warmat have an uniform color line in order to fit easier with other terrain pieces and avoid the abrupt differences.
